For Saving Water, Go With A Dual Flush Toilet
Dual flush toilets are the greatest water saving invention of the last century. With water used per flush contributing mostly to your increasing water bills each month, and the consumable water level decreasing rapidly these flush systems are the best thing your toilet has seen from the time it was first invented.
Dual Flush Toilet Overview
This innovative toilet system is made compulsory in Australia and Singapore, the entire United States and most parts of Europe.
There have been many raging debates in the toilet industry since the 1980s regarding the question: do dual flush toilets, also known as ultra low flush (ULF) toilets, save more water than standard 1.6 gallons per flush fittings?
A project was undertaken to determine how dual flush toilets compared to single flush toilets. The result was that:
- In single-family residences, the flushing amount of water needed reduced by 68%, in office bathrooms it was reduced by 56% and in restaurants it decreased by 52%.
- The dual flush toilets saved at least an average of 26% more water than the single flush toilets.
- A single-family household will have a payback period of approximately 8.5 years if they buy a $300 dual flush toilet.
Thus ultra low flush toilets performed well in comparison to 6-litre and 13-litre single flush toilets regarding water-spending rates, saving an average of roughly 26 per cent more water than 6-litre single-flush toilets, and when compared to the cost. One disadvantage reported is bowl streaking, however these problems are extremely rare cases.
